When You Say “I’m Too Busy” To Exercise

by Juan Antonio

Why are you not making it to the gym?

Why haven’t you reached your fat loss/build lean muscle goal?

Why are you not making progress with your fat loss/build lean muscle goal?

Please, enlighten me: ____________________.

Don’t worry, I’ll wait.

Please take a moment to review your response. You just wrote down/thought about all the excuses you give yourself for not making progress toward your fitness goals.

You can say what you want, but chances are you’re simply looking for a way out of taking responsibility for not giving your body the exercise it needs and deserves.

If you just want a simple, proven and highly effective fat loss program, let 24/7 Coach do the all the thinking for you.

Here’s the most common bullshit response people give me for why they’re not where they want to be for their goal:

“I’m busy.”

Please Cut The “I’m Busy” Bullshit

You’re not fucking busy. Taylor Swift who’s closing out a whirlwind global tour spanning 85 dates in 13 countries in 8 months in support of her 1989 album is busy. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Space X is busy. The mom with two kids and a full-time job is busy.

Taylor Swift must be super busy then.

If you only have one job, I’m sorry, but you’re not that busy.

“I’m busy” is the most common, bullshit ridden answer I encounter from people who “can’t find time” to exercise or eat nutritious food. If no one has taken the time or care to tell you, please allow me:

Who isn’t busy?

You’re human right? You have two legs, two eyes, two arms, yes? You’re living on planet earth correct? Then you have 24hrs a day, 365 days a year – just like everyone else.

You are free to do as you please with the time you’re given.

Yes, the majority of your time is spent sleeping and working, but if you sleep 6hrs/day, how are you spending those other 18 hours a day?

(If you sleep 8-9hrs/day, I’d follow Arnold’s 6 Rules of Success and “just sleep faster.”)

Do you know what happens if you watch Netflix 2hrs/day (14hrs/wk), go on “dates” 3x/week (3-9hrs/wk) or Facebook an hour/day (30hrs/month)?

You spending the majority of your time watching TV, trying to find companionship or watching the snapshot of other people lives on a mobile screen. Now you know exactly where all your time is going.

Mother of two and working full-time: real-life superhero

Let me introduce you to a client of mine. Her name is Mere. She has two small children, has been married a handful of years and runs a specialized division at one of the world’s most important tech companies. She’s fucking busy.

This is a snapshot of her schedule during the recent birth of her second daughter:

6am – wake up, diaper change and feed Sabrina

6:30am – pump milk for sarina

6:45am – breakfast for family

7:30am – shower and get dressed for work

8:15am – leave house, drive to school, drop off kids in each room

9:15am – arrive at Supertech company for work

5pm – leave Supertech company to pick up kids

6pm – arrive at home, serve dinner

6:30pm – begin Sabrina’s bedtime routine

7:15pm – quality time with Tori followed by her bedtime routine

8:30pm – begin adult time – catch up on work, personal to-dos, quality time with Dan

10pm – pump milk for Sabrina

10:30pm – dream feed Sabrina, then get ready for bed

11pm – go to sleep

Come back to me with a schedule like that and I’d be happy to listen to all you excuses.

Do you want to hear something crazy? Mere was searching for two windows of 20-45 minutes so she could exercise every week.

First of all, where was she going to find the time!? Her only chance was

a) training on Sat/Sun (no 8hr day at the office) or

b) working more strategically & efficiently to squeeze out 20-40min at the office gym pre-work/at lunch.

And secondly, who thinks like that?

A fucking superhero that’s who.

Mere is doing next-generation work at one of the world’s premier tech companies, a budding family life and she wants to find time to exercise?

One word: A-ma-zing.

Do you know why she exercises?

Because she values the time invested into exercising. She enjoys the benefits from exercise.

Trust me, when you have a husband, have kids and are working to solving the world’s most pressing problems, you’re not exercising for BS six-pack abs.

It’s all about feeling good, being pain free and having high energy levels.

Make up your mind

You can search for problems and generate excuses everyday for the rest of your life for why you’re not where you’re want to be.

How’s that working out for you?

Excuses, passing the buck, placing blame on XYZ won’t do shit to get you closer to where you want to be. But it will make you feel better…for a minute or two.

I’m a fan of thinking of solutions. At least solutions – no matter how small – give you a fighting chance.

Make no mistake, if you have more than 10lbs of body fat to lose or are gaining body fat every month, fat is kicking your ass.

Do you really want fat to win?

Are you really going to just sit there and lose a fight you can easily win?

This is your life. It’s your time. If you don’t take care of your body, who will?

Don’t let your life pass you by while you’re waiting on the sidelines for a magical solution that will never come.

The solution is in your mind:

      a) “I want to lose my body fat.”

b) “I don’t want to lose my body fat.”

Be real with yourself. Choose your time wisely. Choose your values wisely.

Make a decision and live with your decision.

There is only trained and untrained.
